Dome Sweet Dome: Conquer the Summer Heat with a Buzz Cut DIY!

Updated: May 25

Sun's out, buns out? Not quite. Ditch the sweaty mop and embrace the aerodynamic awesomeness & freedom of an airy buzz cut. Have a pile of kids? This Buzz Cut DIY Guide will equip you with the knowledge to buzz cut any dome like a boss, including my favorite Amazon clipper tool, which hopefully saves you time and money!

Buzz Cut Technique
For Sawyer's Buzz Cut, I used #2 with #1 around the edges for the fading. Use clippers to clean up along the hairline. Sunscreen is important for any buzz cut when exposed to sun.

Here are my Buzz Cut How-to's

  • Buy Corded: A corded clipper tool will give you much higher performance than the battery-operated options. As you use it, the motor heats up in your hand. If you have multiple heads/kids to cut, this is a prime reason you want corded. Plus, the battery operated or rechargeable options constantly will fail. You will have the corded version f-o-r-e-v-e-r with home use. Also, if you have heads with super thick or coarse hair, you need a corded clipper tool for its higher performance & power.

  • Buzz Cut Clipper Tool Recommendation: Here is a tool I would highly recommend. It has a cord, high per and all the attachments you would need. Buy on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4aDRhLc

  • Clean & Sharpen Your Tools: Make sure there is no build up of hair product on your clipper tool AND that there is no product in the hair you plan to cut.

  • Cut it Dry! It's often easier and quicker to cut on freshly cleaned, dry hair.

  • Mind Your Technique: Shave in the direction of hair growth for the first pass, then against the grain for a closer shave on the second pass. Short, gentle strokes are key to avoid nicks and bumps.

  • Post-Cut TLC: Using rose water or balm moisturizer around the neck and ears can be very soothing. My recommendation: YOUNIQUE YOUOLOGY Rose Water Toning Spritz

Sun's Out, Scalp Protected

Your scalp is just as susceptible to sunburn as any other part of your body. Sunscreen is a Must: Sunscreen isn't just for preventing a sunburn at the beach. The sun emits ultraviolet (UV) rays that can damage your skin over time, even on cloudy days. This damage can lead to premature aging, wrinkles, and more seriously, skin cancer. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is on the rise.  Regular sunscreen use with SPF 30 or higher is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself from this risk. So slather up and keep that dome skin healthy! Don't forget the ears and the back of your neck!

Remember, a fresh scalp (brand new to the sun) is MUCH more sensitive to the harmful sun rays than someone that is balding & is much easier to burn.

Sunscreen is Essential for these Summer Activities:

  • Hitting the Beach or Pool:  Sunshine and cool water are a classic combo.  Sunscreen is essential to shield yourself from UV rays while relaxing on the sand, splashing in the pool, or playing beach volleyball.

  • Hiking or Biking:  Exercising outdoors is a great way to enjoy the sun and nature.  Sunscreen protects your skin from burning while you explore trails or bike paths.

  • Golf, Basketball, Tennis - All Outdoor Sports!  Whether it's a friendly game of frisbee in the park or a competitive soccer match, sunscreen keeps you safe from UV rays while you get active.

  • Gardening or Yard Work:  Spending time tending to your flowers or mowing the lawn can be a sunny activity.  Sunscreen shields your skin from UV rays while you work your green thumb.

Hats are Your Friend:  A stylish hat offers shade and shields your head from the sun's harsh rays. Opt for breathable materials like cotton or linen.

Hydrate for a Healthy Scalp!
Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water keeps your body cool and your scalp healthy.

The Perks of a Breezy Head

A buzz hair cut in the summer comes with some unexpected benefits:

  • Heals the Scalp: Teenagers with an oily scalp often can have yellow plaque build-up. (See pics) Giving the head a buzz cut will allow it to breathe and give it the space it needs to heal.

  • Cooler Comfort:  No more sweat pooling on your head! A shaved head allows for better heat dissipation, keeping you feeling cooler.

  • Quick Drying:  No more towel-drying your hair after a swim. A shaved head dries in a snap, perfect for poolside lounging.

  • Low Maintenance:  Forget the time and effort spent styling your hair. Shaving your head is a low-maintenance way to look sharp.

Embrace the Dome

A buzz cut can be a liberating and stylish choice, not to mention cost-effective for moms! With the right tools, technique, and sun protection, you can rock a smooth, healthy dome all summer long. So grab your clippers & embrace the cool breeze.
